The AR46 wheels are well-built, solid and lightweight
This is my first experience with a customized wheelset and the Light Bicycle AR46 wheels impressed me. I purchased them for my Canyon Endurace CF SLX8 to replace the stock aluminum DT Swiss wheels. The AR46 wheels are well-built, solid and lightweight. While not crazy-light like the 1200g wheelsets with carbon spokes, considering the depth and solid feel, they are right on the sweet-spot. I like that the rims have a 21mm internal and 28mm external width, which perfectly fits my 700x30c Vittoria tubeless tires. When customizing the wheels, the website seamlessly guided me through selecting each component and option, making the process easy, even for someone like me who doesn’t have detailed knowledge about the structure and components of a wheel. I especially appreciate that they give me the option to fully customize how my rims look (finish, weave, paint, etc.). Personally, I’m a minimalist, so the UD matte finish with stealth decal suited my taste!
The wheels survived both my GranFondo Whistler and Seattle-to-Portland rides without issue!
I used these wheels for the GranFondo Whistler and STP (Seattle to Portland) rides in 2023, and enjoyed both experiences. The STP ride was a 206 mile one-day ride that included many sections with challenging road conditions. Through crosswinds and potholes on the pavement the AR46's felt smooth and worked flawlessly. During my GranFondo Whistler ride, there were lots of long descents where I reached 50mph on the bike. I was nervous to descend that fast as I’m not a adrenaline-seeking cyclist and don’t think risking crashing to save a few seconds makes any sense. Surprisingly, when speed ramped up, I was pleased with how stable the wheels were and I didn’t feel significant impact from crosswinds. Climbs on the route were more challenging - as I wouldn't call my bike ultra-light - but still, the wheels responded to my power input quickly and with little drag. The AR46 rims are a very reliable, all-around choice for flat, hilly or even climbing routes. I may even mount some gravel tires (35mm) and try out some unpaved trails someday!
