Supporting my dream is carefully chosen gear for each discipline.
To earn my place at the start line alongside the best triathletes in the world would take years of training. It was my dream and I made it happen. Ahead is a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run. At 20 years old, I am the 18th youngest in a field of 3,552 male triathletes from 104 countries. My preparation has been meticulous. I’m ready. It’s go time and we charge into the water.
To compete at this level, where every second counts, takes years of training constantly pushing yourself to your limits, recovering, then going again. Supporting this pursuit is carefully chosen gear for each discipline such as a swim wetsuit, goggles, triathlon bike, aero helmet, wheels and carbon plated running shoes. There’s a complete set of gear for training, and top quality gear reserved just for racing.
Hambini’s wind tunnel tests first lead me to Light Bicycle.
My preparation is skillfully guided for a year by my coach, who's a five-time world champion. We discuss and refine every element, constantly searching for gains and energy savings. We talk technique, strategy, gear and drills to lift my performance.
Reading Hambini’s wind tunnel tests first lead me to Light Bicycle, which soon supplied my first race wheelset – a set of R65s. Being a student on a budget, I wanted affordable speed and these delivered. Later I ordered Light Bicycle’s disc wheel (UFO-C21) which helped take my performance to an even higher level.
So far, I’ve raced seven Ironman 70.3 triathlons and another 20+ shorter races, and usually push in the range of 280-310 watts and average 39-42kmh depending on conditions and terrain. My bike performance is usually strong enough to be in the top 10 across all age groups. I’ve also been State Series Champion and National Aquabike Champion for my age group. You can see my Ironman 70.3 race data here.
My race setup is the disc wheel and R65 on the front ( I also packed the R65 rear just in case it was too windy to ride the disc). My tyres are GP5000 25mm tubeless at 80psi, which is the widest size my frame allows but a perfect match for the rim width. The wheels have been faultless, fast and good enough to race against others riding major brands. Whilst I seriously considered the R88s, I ultimately decided the R65s would provide the best weight and all-round performance.
I will soon be buying new Light Bicycle disc wheelsets for training and racing.
161,000 tried to qualify to be one of the 6,500 males and females racing. I proudly join other Australians in the athlete parade of nations. While enjoying a quiet dinner, I was lucky to spend 10 mins chatting to Olympic Gold Medalist Kristian Blummenfelt and Ironman World Champion Gustav Iden about race strategy and nutrition. Kristian would win the pro race two days later.
My own experience at the World Championships was life changing. For the bike, I was 332 of 3552 males (top 9%) and ultimately crossed the line 82nd in my age group. It was a brutal course in the Utah desert and I’m extremely proud of my performance. I have since qualified for my second Ironman 70.3 World Championship, to be held in Taupo, New Zealand. I’ve now upgraded my triathlon bike to a disc brake version, which means I will soon be buying new Light Bicycle disc wheelsets for training and racing. Can’t wait!
